Vision to Reality

Driving ALPR Innovation Through Optical Customization

In the high-stakes world of automatic license plate recognition (ALPR), a leading technology provider serving law enforcement and government agencies needed to refine their imaging system for greater performance, durability, and reliability.

With devices deployed in covert roadside installations and integrated into emergency and agency vehicles, their equipment had to withstand vibration, weather, and mission-critical use cases.

While this customer never sourced cameras through STEMMER IMAGING USA, they turned to us to solve an equally important challenge: vision clarity and filter resilience in rugged environments.

The Challenge

The customer had transitioned to compact M12 lenses for their fixed and mobile ALPR systems, but those lenses lacked the threading needed for traditional filters.

Early attempts using set-screw mounts failed in the field:

  • Standard filters fell off in mobile and high-vibration scenarios
  • No native threading on M12 lenses for filter integration
  • Filters needed to block specific wavelengths (820–840nm) for IR illumination
  • Logistics were complex due to unpredictable spikes in public sector purchasing

The Approach

STEMMER IMAGING USA helped design a ruggedized optical solution to preserve image quality and system performance without redesigning the device:

1. Worked with Midwest Optical to develop a micro-filter cementing technique for M12 lenses

2. Delivered custom filters aligned to the customer’s 820–840nm IR illumination spectrum

3. Supplied thousands of precision lenses annually, preconfigured with integrated filters

4. Maintained rolling inventory buffer to support government bid surges and delivery volatility

The Results

What began as a lens supply relationship matured into a collaborative design and logistics partnership:

  • Achieved vibration-proof, tamper-resistant filter integration for M12 systems
  • Provided a custom optical path without degrading image quality
  • Enabled consistent ALPR system performance across fleet vehicles and fixed deployments
  • Established a trusted sourcing model during unpredictable procurement cycles

Why It Matters

When law enforcement agencies deploy imaging systems across jurisdictions, even the smallest failure can compromise results.

STEMMER IMAGING USA helped this OEM preserve clarity and system ruggedness by solving a problem others overlooked: making sure every lens delivered the right filtered image every time.
