Some technology shifts start with a quiet conversation. During a trade show discussion, STEMMER IMAGING USA introduced a fixed-wing drone manufacturer to a new imaging module that offered the same resolution they relied on, but at less than half the weight. The team wasn’t actively seeking a change, but the insight prompted a strategic rethink of what was possible.
The Challenge
The customer had a mature UAV product with proven performance. However, heavy imaging payloads limited their mission time. No change was planned, but we saw an opportunity:
- High weight-to-flight-time tradeoff with the existing DSLR body
- Resolution needs made compact sensors nonviable
- Minimal desire to reengineer lens/camera mount
- Balancing payload weight while supporting endurance gains
The Approach
STEMMER IMAGING USA introduced a new ultra-light imaging module that retained full resolution and lens compatibility. While not the OEM, we facilitated testing, evaluation, and strategic comparisons, helping the customer see the bigger picture: how small changes could deliver significant operational upside.
