Vision to Reality
Standardizing Vision for Mobile Rail Geometry Inspection
A North American rail safety innovator needed to update their specialized inspection trucks - vehicles that monitor track geometry while operating on both rail and road. Their long-standing imaging setup had grown unreliable, and they knew change was needed - but it had to be surgical.
The company turned to STEMMER IMAGING USA to help drive technical transformation without derailing their field processes.
The Challenge
System complexity had crept in over time. The customer relied on multiple signal repeaters to move camera data from undercarriage hardware to in-cabin processing.
And while they were open to a better solution, they were cautious:
- They required long cable runs through enclosed chassis and bulkheads
- Legacy suppliers’ equipment was deeply embedded in workflows
- Vibration, routing complexity, and multi-environment exposure posed durability risks
- They needed a plug-and-play option without a heavy redesign
The Approach
This wasn’t about pushing to sell a product - it was about solving for a tangled architecture and gaining trust over time.
1. Replaced the legacy vendor by validating Teledyne line scan performance in live tests
2. Specified CEI BitMax cables with embedded electronics to span 25+ meters without repeaters
3. Helped re-route cable architecture to reduce physical stress points
4. Invested two years in feasibility discussions and on-site collaboration to secure stakeholder buy-in
The Results
By simplifying the architecture and elevating performance, we gave this customer a new standard:
- Removed vulnerable signal repeaters and reduced failure points
- Improved image stability and data throughput
- Unified on a single sensor platform across truck fleet
- Built confidence for future platform scaling and upgrades
Why It Matters
This project highlights the power of patient, engineering-first collaboration. The customer wasn’t just looking for parts - they needed a transformation they could trust. STEMMER IMAGING USA helped them move forward confidently, one milestone at a time.
Insights from the Field
Technicians previously had to troubleshoot cable interruptions regularly. With the new cable backbone, both maintenance and installation became significantly easier, saving time and reducing operational disruption.

Looking Forward
As the current platform stabilizes, the customer is working with STEMMER IMAGING USA to assess new use cases for embedded vision and to prepare for the next generation of Teledyne sensors.
