Supporting High-Performance UAV Payloads with Compact Imaging Precision
This unique aerial platform, designed for tactical and government use, required a compact imaging system to fit within a highly constrained payload bay. Unlike conventional multi-rotor drones, this design uses a central propeller and a compact form factor, which limits internal payload dimensions. STEMMER IMAGING USA delivered a fit-for-purpose camera solution with the right balance of weight, resolution, and optical clarity.
The Challenge
This vertically-lifting UAV had a narrow diameter for gimbal payloads, with limited space and tight center-of-gravity tolerances. Off-the-shelf DSLR cameras physically didn’t fit, and previously integrated components affected flight dynamics.
- Needed to reduce body width and shift the center of gravity for stability
- Maintain resolution and performance under vibration and altitude variance
- Match lens performance without disrupting prior calibration or gimbal mounting
- Deliver volume supply within government contract cycles
The Approach
STEMMER IMAGING USA helped the customer transition to a compact imaging solution that retained the optics and resolution they needed while improving system fit and balance. We also advised on lens selection to reduce forward tilt weight, supporting better gimbal performance and stabilization.
- Identified compact imaging module to fit within diameter limitations
- Balanced payload around existing lens strategy for faster integration
- Advised on short-barrel lens alternatives to improve the center of gravity
- Provided ongoing support for NDAA compliant system roadmap
The Results
- Enhanced camera fit and stability within compact UAV chassis
- Improved flight time and maneuverability due to better balance
- Supported 100+ unit purchases in active deployment
- Integrated seamlessly into unique, vertically-oriented UAV design
Why It Matters
In tactical UAV design, no two payloads are alike. STEMMER IMAGING USA delivered both the product and the field knowledge needed to maximize every cubic inch of space.
Insights from the Field
- Center-of-gravity tuning is often overlooked — but critical to real-world performance
- Custom-fit imaging makes advanced form factors feasible

Looking Forward
STEMMER IMAGING USA is engaged with the customer’s roadmap for future payloads, including modular optics and onboard processing integration.
