Vision to Reality
Enabling Retread Quality for a Global Tire Manufacturer
One of the world’s most recognizable tire manufacturers needed to solve a very specific problem: how to measure the roughness of layered rubber in their retreading process.
The surface texture was critical to proper bonding, but the manufacturer had no consistent method for measuring it. They turned to STEMMER IMAGING USA to help unlock the power of vision in a process that had long relied on intuition and manual checks.
The Challenge
Retreading rubber for high-performance use cases requires exact surface preparation.
This company needed a solution that could work across multiple facilities and deliver consistent, actionable results:
- No standardized method for validating surface roughness before bonding
- Vision knowledge gaps across plant-level teams
- Manual QA processes were unreliable and hard to scale
- Required cross-team alignment between global engineering groups
The Approach
STEMMER IMAGING USA took an education-first approach to build vision literacy before proposing a solution.
We combined training, technical demos, and collaborative testing to help the customer’s team understand what was possible:
1. Conducted tailored training sessions in multiple locations, covering optics, filters, and 3D sensing
2. Introduced a High Performance 3D Laser profiler capable of micron-level profiling in real time
3. Advised on software integration and validation benchmarks
4. Unified global engineering feedback into a standard deployment model
The Results
By empowering the customer’s team, we enabled a shift from guesswork to repeatable excellence:
- Solution validated and approved for rollout in 30+ global plants
- Created a scalable QA method for surface texture
- Shifted internal culture to embrace vision as a core process asset
- Strengthened supplier-customer collaboration across borders
Why It Matters
This project wasn’t just about installing a sensor; it was about introducing a new language of quality. STEMMER IMAGING USA gave the customer not just tools, but the knowledge and confidence to integrate vision at scale.
Insights from the Field
Engineers reported immediate value in being able to see and quantify something that was once subjective.
Visual feedback improved operator training and enabled more consistent line performance.

Looking Forward
Following rollout, the customer plans to incorporate vision analytics into other inspection steps and has asked STEMMER IMAGING USA to assist with roadmap planning for their broader automation goals.
